Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer met with port workers, small business owners and local officials Tuesday during a stop in Miami as part of her nationwide workforce listening initiative.
The visit to PortMiami and downtown Miami marked the second stop on Chavez-DeRemer’s “America at Work” tour, where she aims to gather input from workers and employers across various industries.
“Miami is among our nation’s busiest ports and has one of the fastest-growing metro areas,” Chavez-DeRemer said. “I enjoyed visiting with the workers who keep Miami running.”
Rep. Maria Salazar, who represents part of Miami-Dade County, accompanied the labor secretary during the visit.
Workforce development focus
During the meetings, discussions centered on workforce development, infrastructure improvements, and expanding economic opportunities, according to the Department of Labor.
“The world is changing, and we need to re-tool our policies to put our workers and our families first,” Salazar said.
Chavez-DeRemer met with longshoremen who handle cargo at one of the nation’s busiest ports, which serves as a critical hub for trade between the United States and Latin America.
National listening tour continues
The secretary’s visit is part of a broader initiative to gather input directly from workers and employers that could inform federal labor policies.
Department officials indicated that Chavez-DeRemer plans additional stops nationwide, where she will meet with union members, contractors, employers and community leaders.
The tour aims to ensure that “real-world experiences help shape and modernize federal labor policies and practices,” according to the Department of Labor.
