More than 2,600 employees at a major California electrical contractor will receive back wages after federal investigators found the company failed to properly calculate overtime pay rates.

The U.S. Department of Labor recovered over $1.4 million in wages for 2,620 workers at Cupertino Electric Inc., one of California’s largest electrical contractors. The San Jose-based company violated the Fair Labor Standards Act by not including non-discretionary bonuses when calculating overtime rates, according to Labor Department investigators.

“The U.S. Department of Labor is committed to making sure employees are paid properly, including the full amount of their legally required overtime rates,” said Wage and Hour Division Assistant District Director Lilita Hom in San Jose.

Cupertino Electric, a subsidiary of Quanta, specializes in designing and building complex electrical systems for both private and public sector clients. The company operates across multiple states including Arizona, California, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, New Mexico, Ohio, Oregon, Utah, and Washington.

Workers who believe they may have wage issues can contact the department’s toll-free helpline at 866-4US-WAGE (487-9243). The Labor Department also offers a free Timesheet App for Android and iOS devices to help workers track hours and verify accurate pay.
