A Pennsylvania worker who was permanently paralyzed in a job-related vehicle crash has secured a $2.25 million settlement, one of the largest in the state’s recent workers’ compensation history, according to the law firm that represented him.

The settlement, reached by Philadelphia-based law firm Stern & Cohen, comes despite the limitations of the Pennsylvania Workers’ Compensation Act, which typically restricts benefits to wage loss and medical expenses.

“These types of recoveries are exceptionally rare,” said David Stern, founding partner of the firm, who led the case.

The injured worker, a professional driver, was left with lifelong disabilities following the motor vehicle accident. Multiple rounds of litigation were required to reach the final agreement, Stern said, which ensures financial support and ongoing medical care for the client.

Stern said his team’s approach was focused on maximizing the worker’s recovery given the extent of the injuries.

“This case exemplifies what we strive to do every day—deliver results that truly make a difference in our clients’ lives,” he said.

The firm did not disclose details of the legal arguments used or the timeline of the case, but called the outcome “life-changing” for the client.

While the settlement does not set a legal precedent, it highlights the potential liabilities employers and insurers face in catastrophic injury cases—even in jurisdictions with capped or limited compensation rules.

For HR professionals and company leaders, the case underscores the importance of robust safety measures and comprehensive insurance coverage for workers who drive as part of their duties.
