Sun Life U.S. received the Crystal Award for being named a Top Place to Work by USA Today for the fifth consecutive year, the company announced Tuesday.

The recognition comes from employee survey results conducted by Energage along with an assessment of the company’s benefits and workplace culture.

“Receiving this award and marking five consecutive years as a Top Place to Work in the U.S. is truly meaningful to us because it verifies that our approach is working and employees are engaged,” said Tammi Wortham, senior vice president of Human Resources at Sun Life U.S.

Workplace flexibility central to employee satisfaction

The financial services organization maintains a hybrid work model across its six U.S. business hubs located in Greater Boston; Portland, Maine; Hartford, Connecticut; Baltimore; Kansas City, Missouri; and Milwaukee. Employees decide when to use office spaces and when to work remotely.

Sun Life’s employee benefits package includes what the company describes as one of the most generous paid family and medical leave programs in the country, supporting caregivers, new parents, and employees dealing with health conditions.

The company also offers a sabbatical program for professional development or personal time.

Employee engagement and inclusion initiatives

To foster connection among its thousands of U.S. employees, Sun Life hosts the “Sunny Games,” an online trivia and game tournament where colleagues can form teams or meet new coworkers. The event won recognition as best virtual employee engagement event from Ragan Communications in 2022.

The company maintains eight Inclusion Networks, also known as Employee Resource Groups, including Asian Alliance; Black Excellence Alliance; BrightWomen; DiverseAbility; Emerging Professionals Networks; Hispanic & Latin-America Alliance; Sun Life Pride; and Veteran’s Engagement Team.

Sun Life U.S. has also received workplace recognitions from Forbes and TIME, and maintains a perfect score on the Human Rights Campaign’s Corporate Equality Index.

The company employs more than 8,500 people in the U.S. and provides benefits services to approximately 50 million Americans through employers, industry partners and government programs.
