Independent Living Systems has been named one of America’s Greatest Workplaces for Women in 2025 by Newsweek, underscoring the Miami-based healthcare company’s efforts to support women across all levels of its workforce.

The recognition, presented in partnership with Plant-A Insights Group, evaluated employers on compensation, work-life balance, culture, diversity and inclusion, and leadership opportunities. The selection process included confidential employee surveys, public data analysis, and HR interviews.

Of the 1,500 employees at Independent Living Systems (ILS), about 67 percent are women. Women also comprise 65 percent of the company’s leadership team.

“Women are at the heart of healthcare, and we are proud to support, uplift, and invest in their growth,” said Josefina Carbonell, ILS’s chief advocacy officer and a former U.S. assistant secretary of aging.

The list includes companies across various sectors, such as Nike, United Airlines, and the Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company.

“This honor from Newsweek reaffirms the culture we’ve built—one that values recognition, trust, and empowerment,” said Nestor Plana, chairman and CEO of ILS.

Newsweek’s Josh Smith, senior director of growth and strategic partnerships, said companies recognized in the report “set the bar high for what a truly supportive workplace should be.”

The recognition comes during a year of growth for ILS. The company was recently named the largest Latino-owned healthcare company in the U.S. by Latino Leaders Magazine and secured a six-year Medicaid managed care contract in Florida through its health plan, Florida Community Care.

Independent Living Systems provides health and social services to vulnerable populations in Medicare, Medicaid, and Dual-Eligible markets. It operates two health plans—Florida Community Care and Florida Complete Care—focused on long-term care and individuals with complex health needs.
