Midwest retailer Meijer earned its seventh consecutive Great Place to Work certification with record-high employee satisfaction scores, highlighting the company’s focus on workplace culture and team member recognition.
The Grand Rapids, Michigan-based company excelled in three key areas: community investment, creating an inclusive environment where employees can be themselves, and ensuring workers feel valued by their managers.
Record participation in peer recognition program
Meijer’s employee recognition efforts reached new heights in 2024, with team members acknowledging their colleagues more than 4 million times through the company’s “mteam” online platform. The program allows workers to recognize contributions and redeem points for extra pay, gift cards, merchandise, experiences or charitable donations.
“Our team members are telling us that across the company we are creating a supportive environment that encourages learning and growth,” said Rick Keyes, Meijer’s president and CEO. “This not only makes Meijer a Great Place to Work, but also helps cultivate a welcoming atmosphere for our customers to shop.”
Comprehensive benefits package drives satisfaction
The retailer offers employees weekly pay, team member discounts, flexible scheduling, free education opportunities, career advancement programs, paid parental leave and childcare discounts. Workers also have access to multiple health insurance options and 401(k) retirement contributions.
Michelle Hall, chief human resources officer, said the company continues seeking ways to improve the employee experience. “Our team members are core to our success, so we want to be sure they feel appreciated and valued,” Hall said. “These results show that we are focusing on the right areas.”
About the certification process
The Great Place to Work certification recognizes employers based on employee responses to The Trust Index Survey, which measures workplace culture across credibility, fairness, respect, camaraderie and pride.
Meijer operates more than 500 locations including supercenters, grocery stores, neighborhood markets and express locations across Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky and Wisconsin. The family-owned company employs more than 70,000 people and has operated since 1934.
